Lawrence Virgilio was a victim of the 9/11 attack but was not a direct casualties of the attack. He was a firefighter who went to the site after the initial attack. He gave his life trying to save others lives. He was apart of the advanced rescue specialist at Squad 18. After 13 years of serving he was offered the opportunity to be apart of a elite squad that would go to other cities when help is needed. Then the day of the attack him and the six others in his squad went to the attack sight, on the way to the site he called his girlfriend and told her that he loved her and he had to do this. Sadly all the men perished in their attempts of rescue and only four of the bodies were found. I commend Lawrence greatly for the heroic actions he took.
The thing is Lawrence did not have to be a firefighter, he had two other degrees. One was a degree for physical therapy from New York University. He loved helping people rehabilitate, and he also had a minor in dance. He loved to dance and was active in the community plays. Lawrence must love being a firefighter and was a true hero for his actions. Lawrence was only 38 when he past away, and did more with his life then most people do with their whole life.
The most inspiring thing about Lawrence was that he knew what could have happened to him, which unfortunately did, and still went through with the rescue attempt. Also that he decided he wanted to be apart of firefighters instead of pursuing another career because he know it was what he wanted to do, and that it was of bigger importance then anything else. He was not even married at the time and could have done so much more with his life, but knowing what could happen told his girlfriend that he had to do this. The main thing that inspired me in my research of Lawrence that i can apply to my life is that if I believe something is right and want to do that with my life I should go out and do that, just like how Lawrence became a firefighter.

.
Sounds like he took life by the horns and went after his dreams.
ReplyDeleteReading about the heroic actions of people that would give their own life to save others inspires me to help anyone as much as I can because maybe it would just make their day.
ReplyDeleteWas he one of the bodies found or was he never located? Was it said if he saved anybody in his attempts? He sounds like a hero to me opting for firefighting over following were his degrees could have taken him.
ReplyDeleteHe gave up his life by saving other people even when he could've just watched it on the news. He gave up his life knowing that he did a god thing.
