Exploration Four

The story that affected me most from the documentary Rebirth was the one told by Nick Charls. Nick was a teenager at the time of 9/11 and his mom worked on the 104th floor of  the first World Trade Center building to fall that day. This affected me most because of the way he handled his loss. His early interviews he seemed to be in disbelief. This turned to anger  towards his dad in his later interviews. In his latest shown in the film he seemed to be at peace with his loss. "I guess that's really when you start letting go of something like that, when you come to terms with the anger." I think he handled his loss and this tragedy and came out of it well. He could have stayed angry and let all of those feelings ruin his life but instead he used his loss as an opportunity to learn about his mom in a new way by writing a book. He also eventually forgave his father and came to terms with everything from that part of his life. This is something I think is truly inspiring. Something like this is what people never bounce back from and the fact that Nick did and did it well is amazing.

I think that the time lapse of this movie was a strength because we go to see all of these people not only deal with that tragedy but slowly heal from it. I think that just showing the tragedy is a way to make viewer feel pity for those who experienced loss but are just left with feeling pity and empathy for those people. Showing the same people from the very beginning of this experience to eight years later gave viewers some closure as they saw the people comeback from what had happened to them and begin to heal.

I think that the most important thing I took away from these stories is that it is natural for us as human being to persevere and get through tragedies like this. At the same time, we use experiences like this to remember even after we have healed. This isn't something that I consider often and this documentary really brought it to my attention.

  1. I absolutely agree with you. Once he found a way to deal with his anger, he became a better person. It's awesome that he and his father rekindled their relationship!

  2. I connected with Nick's story as well, I think it was really respectful for him to take a job on wall street like his mom and to learn as much as he could about her because he was pretty young when he lost her. he didn't have his dad to talk to about his mother so he went out and did it himself in order to get closer on her death.
