Remembering William Mahoney Jr.

William Mahoney was a firefighter who gave his life to save the lives of others on September 11, 2001. He was a member of Rescue 4 in Queens, and was a previous member of East New York Engine 236 and Ladder 103. He also belonged to New York's Police Department of the 73rd precinct scuba diving unit (Ice Rescue Instructor). Ex-captain of Lakeland Fire Department. William is survived by his wife Donna, and four children, Denise, William Jr., Shannon, and Joseph. He loved to listen to Irish Music, and relaxing on the beach. While researching about William's life, i could really tell that he had a passion for a career in firefighting or police work. It seemed as if he wanted to gain experience in whatever field possible to improve his skills. I could tell that William loved his career, because he would go to work doing something in which he was unaware if he would return home that night. It is really inspiring to learn about people who sacrificed their lives for something they loved to do. How could i apply this to my life? Considering i want to become an educator there seems to be a little more risk in that career what with all of the school shootings and attacks, i know now that i need to prepare myself now for those types of situations that may occur in the future, and put my students first safety first. William Mahoney was not a selfish man, he served his country and state in a way that is so heroic, he could never be forgotten.

  2. People like William need to live so they can teach others. He did so many things and did not ask for anything. He with many more firefighters gave up their lives trying to help other people.

  5. William had a lot of jobs being a firefighter. This shows me that he loved to help people. Also he had to be willing to risk his life, and he must have known that, why else would he take all these opportunities to save people under dangerous conditions.
