Remembering Harry Ramos

Harry Ramos was one of the many people that died on 9/11. He was born in Brooklyn but later moved to Newark, New Jersey. He was 45 the day he died. Before becoming an employee for the May Davis group, a small investment bank, he was a carpenter. He had one child with his wife. She would describe him as a great dancer, a sharp dresser and a good singer. She compared him to Fred Astaire.

During 9/11, as he was exiting he and his friend helped up a stranger named Victor Wald, down flights of stairs until he couldn't go any longer. Harry decided to stay with him instead of just leaving him tehre and they died together. He was the only employee from the May Davis group that didn't make it out. He has influenced a lot of people. For example, there is a scholarship named in his honor and a bowling tournament in Puerto Rico has been renamed for him.

I learned that Harry Ramos was courageous and was very caring for others including the people he didn't know. Reading his story had a big impact on me because not many others would have done what he did.  Putting others needs in front of my own shows that I'm not so self centered, I care for others and that I would be willing to help anyone in any situation I would be in.

  1. I ended up watching the rest of the movie we viewed in class and Harry's story was extremely inspiring to hear about. It is nice to know that there are people in the world who aren't selfish. Harry did something thousands of others couldn't, he risked his life for a complete stranger, and instead of living with the regret of leaving Victor in the stairwell that day, he decided to make a new friend, help someone in need, and risked his life while attempting to save another.

  2. That is so sad. That's a good man right there. Putting others in front of himself. Staying with a friend and sacrificing everything. Incredible.

  3. I think its really inspirational how Harry stayed behind with another man, that is something only someone who truly cared about others more then himself would do. Considering he didn't even know the man and tried to help him out of the building was inspiring enough especially in a time like this when people are scared and panicking worrying about their own lives makes it all the more inspirational. It also had to take the right kind of man to sit through what he had to know would kill him just to comfort a stranger.

  4. That is such a brave thing to do, to willingly die so a man does not have to be alone in his final hours.
