Nicholas Chirls

Nicholas Chirls story affected me the most because he lost his mother and I don’t know what I would do if I lose my mother. He lost his mother at a young age and his siblings were even younger than him and he supported them. He doesn't say a lot about his father but he gets along with his father at the end when they have lunch with each other. He worked at Lehman brothers (his mother started out there). Nick thought he was walking in his mother’s steps and he picked up where his mother left off. In 2007 after 6 years he remembered less of his mother and he wanted to remember more about her. He said that “I don’t hate Osama Bin Laden” He hated what he did but he didn't know Bin Laden so he didn't hate him.

I think the time-lapse structure in the film helped in describing the characters and what they did 8 years after the event. It was strength because we could see them move on and get closure. The people in the film didn't get closure for some time but they eventually moved on. Nick got a job at Wall Street and thought less about his mother. He grew up and talked with father after a while and they really connected again. The most important thing that I took away from the stories in the film was that things happen and you just have to accept that, there is nothing that you can do to change the outcome.

  1. I really like Nicholas too. It's hard thinking of what I'd do without my mom, but it's incredible what this guy did. I think the line, "I don't hate Osama Bin Laden." was written down by everyone because it was so powerful. :) It was so cool to see the changes he went through, especially with his father.

  2. I since his father moved on so fast and that he kicked him out ruined the relationship between them, and then since he was young i believe he just panicked and wasn't ready to move on. I believe that's why he took his job on wall street because he wanted to stay with him mom longer.

  3. I like Nick too. When he talked I think he was the most relatable because he was the closest to being in the same place as me in life in the film. I also liked the way they showed the time go by during the movie seeing the characters you grew attached to throughout the film eventually feeling better was inspiring and good to see.

  4. Nicholas was a very good character to reflect the overall theme of the film. The film was mostly about how people who have experienced tragedy overcome it over years, and Nicholas was a prime example. He started out super bitter towards Bin Laden and the world really, however by the end he had started accepting his mother's loss and had shifted his efforts to learning about her and getting closer to his dad instead of being controlled by his anger.
