Exploration Four

The story of Nick Chirls affected me the most because he was the one I could relate to since he was closest to my age. Losing his mom at a young age has influenced his acts growing up because he was closer to her than he was at his dad at the time. He wanted to follow in her footsteps by working on wall street. In the film he talked about how he worked for the Lehman Brothers one summer and he found out wonderful stories about his mom throughout his coworkers. The different interviews shows Nick progression on how much he's maturing and realizing that he and her mom are not the same person. He comes to a realization that his mom "would have been proud of him no matter what he did". And I think that that was the most important thing he gained from this whole experience.

The effect of time-lapse helped in showing change throughout all of the five characters that were interviewed. This was a strength because all of them gets closure at some point and they can start to move on with their lives. For example, Tanya Tepper starts a new relationship and ended up getting married and having children. Ling  Young is happy that she is alive because she saw that people were in a much worse condition than she was.

One of the most important things I took away from these stories is that time heals all wounds. Everyone takes different amounts of time but they will eventually heal and start their life again.

  1. I like how Nick became a better person because of it. Once he understood that he couldn't hold onto his anger and hatred anymore, it was as if a boulder was lifted from his shoulders.

  2. I related to him because i couldn't imagine losing my mother but now that i think about it i am close to his age too. He becomes mature towards the end of the film and it shows how much he has grown up. I agree with you on the time-lapse thing. It shows how the characters have moved on.

  3. I think working on Wall Street and trying to basically be his mother really allowed Nick to find out who he was and what he wanted to do with his life. after the seven years of interviewing, i think Nick finally came to accept his mothers death, and although he isn't living life for her, he will not ever forget who she was and knows that he can make her proud in whatever he chooses to do in life.
