Exploration six

Tom Joad is the character that I'm really invested in at this point. He's very loyal to his family and doesn't let anyone talk bad to him. Jim Casy is the one that I seem to connect with the most. He's not really one to speak his mind but notices and questions everything that's happening. He doesn't really talk a lot but when he does it's usually for a good reason.

The conflict that's most important is how farming turned into a business. The chapter begins talking about how the Americans took the land from the Mexicans. Eventually farming became an industry because instead of the owners doing the physical labor, they imported slaves. "They farmed on paper; and they forgot the land, the smell, the feel of it, and remembered only that they owned it, remembered only what they gained and lost by it". This shows how much the owners don't care about the land and just wanted it for the profits.

The theme that I chose is self-sacrifice. In the book the main event in chapter 20 is when they fight the deputy and Casy takes the blame for all of it. This is important because he thought that this would be better than just sitting around but also making sure Tom doesn't get sent back to McAlester. Self-sacrifice applies today because there are people that are working multiple jobs just to make sure that they can pay the rent or make sure their family gets fed.

  1. I agree with you about Tom Joad. I chose him as well. I like how he's the protector of the family. Your theme is also a very common theme in the book. Great post, Lorenzo!
