Exp 5 The Other Half

My title for Chapter 18 would be "The Other Half" because granpa died, and now, his other half, granma has also died. Another possible option would be "The Great Valley" because of the beautiful valley the Joads stop at when they get to California. In this chapter, It was good to see Ma develop as a character. Her motherly instincts become a theme in the chapter as she protects the family, and does what she can to help them get to Barstow, even if that means staying next to Granmas dead body all night in order to get them to California. As Ma miserably says "The fambly hadda get acrost," We see her strength and bravery that she envokes for her family.

The second main event of chapter 18 is the arrival in California. Even though they dont have much money, and what little money they have left theyll have to put towards Ma's burial, they continue on. despite learning that there isnt much work in California, and that the land owners are harsh and corrupt, the Joads have made it to their destination with some optimism at finding work. When they first reach California, they are stunned by the beautiful valley below. They are awestruck at the beauty, and I think this helped to reaffirm any doubts they had about moving to California.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing that it does not belong in a fruit salad. From my personal experience, I know that knowledge can be earned through reading, studying, and a good education, but knowledge can only take you so far. Wisdom is derived from experience, and communication with others. Wisdom is handed down, and is more helpful in life situations.

  1. I like your title for chapter 18. Even though she was acting crazy and out of character, I truly feel like this happens quite a bit in older couples. One will pass away and the other will pass away not to long after. I wonder if it's what they say, "they die of a broken heart".
