I am really invested into Tom Joad because he
really shows his true colors when he talks to other people. He was really mad
when the policeman arrested Floyd Knowles. I empathize with ma Joad the most
because she has to keep everyone in line and has to feed everyone. Sometimes
she doesn't have enough food for everyone but she cannot do anything about it.
The most important challenge in this chapter was
when the policeman arrested Floyd and warned the camp that he will burn it. It
was a challenge because the family wanted to stay there a little bit longer and
get everything together. Another challenge that the family faced was that the
police arrested anyone who resisted. Floyd explains why the police arrest people
for no reason when he says, “Sherriff gets seventy-five cents a day for each
prisoner,an’ he feeds ‘em for a quarter. If he ain’t got prisoners, he don’t make
no profit” (Steinbeck 271).
Police abuse in the 1920s was a normal thing
because everybody did it and the people were scared to rebel. It doesn't happen
as much now because there are rules and regulations that people follow. People
can rebel against the police not be “executed”.
