1. Don't try to gamble your way to wealth
2. Windfalls are for buying freedom, not jet-skis
3. You don't buy shit you can't afford
4. You don't buy shit you don't need
5. You don't pay to have shit stored
6. You don't think of restaurants as a source of food
7. You put the good shit on automatic
8. You stock up when things are on sale
This post is covering the basics on how to save up money for financial freedom. I think some of us could really look at all of these and take them as advice! Here is the summary for each Mr. MoneyMustache topic listed above. 1- Gambling is a way to lose money rather than gain it. His advice is to not take your saved up money to Vegas and spend it in the slots or the games because you will just lose your money. People talk of luck and magic numbers but to him, such things do not exist everyone has the same amount of luck. 2- Windfalls, i.e. paycheck bonuses or raises, are for your high-interest debt or your mortgage. He says if its over $5,000, then you may buy yourself a burrito from chipotle or fancy coffee but that's it! 3- Mr. MoneyMustache says if you are in a debt emergency or if you have to work for a living and would prefer to have a choice, then no you cannot afford whatever it is. 4- This is the one I personally think most people struggle with. Mr. MoneyMustache says "Every material object must be looked upon as a lifelong burden. Will its benefits outweigh the lifelong burden?" He also advises that you don't go "shopping". You get what you need from the grocery store for a healthy meal and that is it. All other things get put into a list and you go get one item that you need and that is it. 5- He suggests you store any extra stuff you have on Craigslist and if you need it you can buy it back later. 6- His suggestion is to never go out on the town not knowing where to eat! 7- Put your bills on automatic payment to not risk late payments and free your mind. 8- He says to stock up on items you already use while they are on sale because it minimizes time and cost of shopping.
I think his ideas in this post are very practical and the suggestions are something everyone could do to save a little extra money. They all make sense also. Think about how much you spend on say things you don't absolutely need or going to restaurants when you can eat at home or go to a cheaper place. We all have done it, some of us more than others. It's basic wants vs. needs. Although, I will be the first to say yes it is hard to resist sometimes but you can also give a little if you are in a stable situation.

I really like this post. I like the quote ""Every material object must be looked upon as a lifelong burden. Will its benefits outweigh the lifelong burden?" It puts in a practical perspective needs vs. wants. I also need to always remind myself of number 6 because I have a tendency to be lazy and want to grab fast food more often than I should.
ReplyDeleteI could definitely take a lot away from this article because ever since college has started for me my spending has gone through the roof. There is so many things such as food I see and just think oh that looks really good and just buy it without thinking even though I have plenty of already paid for food at my house. Probably 75% of the things I buy now-a-days I don't ever need, I just quickly decide I want them.
