The article Get Rich With.. Craigslist from the Mr. Money Mustache blog is focused around the postive efeects craigslist has for the community and the different ways a person can use it to get the most out of their money. Mr. Money Mustache begins with his own story about how pulled two chairs out of his cluttered shed, posted them on Boulder's Craigslist, and proceeded to sell them to a women that had just moved to town for 25 dollars each. This was his most recent craigslist experience but he goes on to list many others, including vehicle sales and house rentals, that have added up to being a couple hundred thousand dollars of deals made on this site. He explains the best parts of that the website is that its free and that anyone can use it to 'store' stuff that they don't need now but might later. At the end he gives tips about the best ways to use the website to sell and buy the things you need.
The usual method of buying items for any purpose is going to a retail store and paying full price for brand name merchandise. The usual method for getting rid of these items after you have used them is either storing them, donating them, throwing them away, or having some kind of yard sale. Craigslist allows you to get a little money back from the items you purchase at stores, but also allows you to stop buying at stores and more easily buy used items. Although it is a good way to find items, it can be dangerous when you don't know who you are buying it from or selling it to. I'm not sure that everyone could get rich by doing this practice but it is definitely a good way to save some money.
Another website I found called Guide to Craigslist talks about similar things as this article but also includes tips on safety and other things Mr. Money Mustache does not include because they aren't related to money.

A very good point, I know a few people that do nothing but buy and sell on craigslist and ebay. I myself have sold quite a few things on craigslist, normally turning a profit or coming very close to breaking even.
ReplyDeleteCraiglist is a great way to sell your items but sometimes you could get ripped off. I sold a pair of OSU football tickets and I think I ripped them off because the seats were not that good and I charged $60 for them. If they had done some research on the stadium prior to buying the tickets then they would not have bought the tickets. Sometimes you can get amazing deals but it is dangerous like you said because you don't know anyone on the website.
ReplyDeleteCraigslist is a good way to try and make or save money. After reading this post, I remembered about a movie that I watched. It was about a guy who documented himself trying to see if he could live off of what Craigslist had to offer for a week. Surprisingly, he did it with help from the generous users.
