The post I read by Mr. Moneymustache was "It's Beer 'o' Clock", now as many of us are underage this article shouldn't apply to us, yet even Mr. Moneymustache states college students can end up blasting about 100$ in one single night on alcohol! This was shocking, but this is not the main topic of the article. In this article MMM suggests a limit on the amount of alcohol one should buy/consume per week. This limit is 6 drinks throughout the entire week, now he says you can either drink all 6 in a single day, or spread it out throughout the week as you please. There is two positives that come from this plan, one being you will be a lot healthier by consuming much less alcohol, secondly you are saving a lot of money, as each drink cost about $1.50. So by setting this limit let's say you drank 12 beers a week, now by only buying 6, you are saving 9$ a week! That add's up very quickly. I would say this idea is pretty conventional as everyone in the world would say, it is generally healthy to drink less alcohol. I don't really see any weaknesses with this plan except maybe not being able to go out as much with your friends.
I also found this related article called "Moderating Drinking". The two articles are pretty similar in a lot of ways yet the main ideas differ very slightly. As in the article by MMM the main idea is really just to save money, but he does mention the health benefits as well. The other article I found described many ways to cut down on your drinking as well, yet the purpose was to help those suffering from alcoholism. Both of these articles provided many reasons and ways to cut down on drinking.

This is a very true fact i figured out years ago that i live by to this day. I don't hardly ever go out to bars because its not cost effective. It is so much cheaper to buy a twelve pack and invite your friends over and spend at most $12 than it is to go to a bar and spend over $20 on four drinks. So its a very ideal way of saving some money.
ReplyDeleteAlthough this article does not pertain to me, Mr. MM states a parallel idea, don't go out every night and limit yourself. It seems obvious but to be honest people make impulse purchases a lot and it can affect your pocket negatively. I know from reading my article about a trip to the movies and Dairy Queen, that it can all add up, the travels and expenses you pay for. It is also hard to deny a fun night out with your friends. I think that if you can stay committed to limiting yourself to a couple nights out a week and limit your expenses when you go out it can mean fat stakcs for you and your pockets.
