Exploration 8

1.) Even though it's strange, I think most don't know what it's like to be in a situation like Ma and Rose of Sharon were in. Desperate times, call for desperate measures. With that being said, I think this is just another example of how social unity is a key factor in this book. If it wasn't for Rose of Sharon, the man would have died without a doubt. As far as her mysterious smile, I'm not sure. First thing I thought was maybe she enjoyed it because it was something she was supposed to experiencing with her child but isn't because it was a stillborn.

2.) I think the future of the Joads is going to continue to be what we've seen throughout the book. It's going to be a struggle but they will always manage one way or another. They have the mentality of a go-getter. They don't take pity nor do they want it. They feel they need to work for everything. They won't just accept a handout without doing something in return. Like I said before, I think it's going to be a struggle of survival but they will pull together and figure it out.

  1. Youre very right about Rose of sharon; she saved the starving man and i, too, was unsure why she was smiling mysteriously, but either way, she was helping him. throughtout the book, the characters did have the mentality of a go-getter and that made the book a lot more interesting

  2. I wholly agree with you as far as the Joad family is concerned. They're way stronger than they seem, and they will continue surviving in that world. They really strike me as being representative of the sheer strength of the human spirit, so I doubt they'll ever give up.

  3. I understand Rose of Sharon did what she did just to save the dying man but the mysterious smile still made the ending really weird. And I agree, eventually the Joads will finally settle down but not for a while because they always seem to run out of work.

  4. I agree the Joads will figure something out. They have adapted very well throughout the book and I think they will carry on still. And as for Rose of Sharon, I think the smile everyone keeps referring to wasn't a bad thing. She was finally the one to provide for someone else as opposed to being provided for. This is a new concept for her, thus being mysterious

  5. I like how you used the theme of social unity in this book. It is a very predominant theme throughout. The only way someone could survive in this time was if strangers and families came together and helped each other survive.
I also agree with you in saying that the Joads family's survival will be a struggle but that they will pull together as a family and figure it out. As we can see the family has made it this far in their journey and even though winter is approaching them they will stick together and not turn back now.

  6. I completely agree with your view on the situation with Rose of Sharon and Ma. Times of struggle do cause very desperate measures. There is no real way to know what her smile meant, but your interpretation is a very logical one, and i do agree with you on it.
