I did not like the book ending all too much. It seemed too abrupt and there was no closure. The readers don't know what happens to any of the characters or if their situations gets any better. I think the very end of the book and Rose of Sharon's act was somewhat creepy. The text got weird and it seemed like something bad was going to happen. However, I do thing that it was a very touching thing that Rose of Sharon did since it was most likely the only option left if the man was to survive
The smile of Rose of Sharon in the very end of the book could be analyzed in a few different ways. I thought that the smile was Steinbeck's way of saying that humanity always has good in them. Despite the harsh conditions and and poverty, Rose of Sharon was able to help someone else and she thought that the opportunity was wonderful.
Looking at the future of the Joad family, I think that they will settle in at one place and find good work during the winter. I think this mainly because a lot of the people that are suffereing in this book are suffering because they are alone or helpless. The Joad family will stay a family and have each other and that is why they will strive and be sucessful. This also goes back to Rose of Sharon's smile which could be been interpreted as Steinbeck's way of saying "everything will be alright."
I did not care much for the ending either, however when I think about it how else is a story like this supposed to end? I don't see any happy ending coming without the novel continuing through all of the depression. I like you interpreted Rose of Sharon's smile at the end, it is different than what most have said and makes me think.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you on the fact that Rose of Sharon's act was a little creepy, but when times are desperate, people do desperate things. These are just some kind of the struggles that humanity has to go through sometimes.
