1. I did not expect the ending, it was kind of
random. Rose of Sharon agreed to the breastfeeding mainly because she was sad
that her baby died. I don't know why Ma Joad would tell her to do such a thing,
I know she was trying to help the hungry man but it was too much. I am not sure
why Steinbeck put in that scene and I am also not sure why Rose of Sharon
smiled mysteriously.
2. I think the Joads are still going to be poor because Tom is not there anymore. He helped with all the main decisions that they had but now it will be hard. They will do fine if there is a challenge because Ma Joad always pulled them out of harm’s way. They can survive if they get a well-paying job but with their luck throughout the last months, it doesn't seem like they will get a job especially without Tom.

The end definitely came out of right field, no way did I ever think that's how it would end, yet I believe it was a good ending because maybe it is a sign that this is a rebirth for the family as they raise the dying man to health. Tom not being there is going to play a huge role as I believe he was the main defender of the family.
