Last Exploration

In The Idea of a Local Economy, Wendell Berry brings up many valid points to starting a local economy. He states that the corporations that basically rule over the nation are exporting the goods that people could use in their own nation, and importing other goods that the people could do without. Also the corporations would outsources jobs just to make the cheapest goods they can. Then as consumers we buy into this by buying all the unnecessary goods the the corporations sell to the public. So Wendell Berry supports the movement for a local economy, in which the people in a community grow and make what they need to live and then export any surplus. This is actually a good movement because it reduces the waste in the world, cuts down on green house gases, and provides fresher and safer food for the public. I believe that we need a balance between the two, the people could make most of the stuff they need and have places to buy goods the they can not make. The only way this will work is if we implement it into our own lives. Like Wendell Berry says " The trouble with this is that a proper concern for nature and our use of nature must be practiced not by our proxy-holders, but by ourselves.

In the Al Gore speech A Planetary Emergency he talks about the effects that green house gases are having on our environment. He talks about many different points such as carbon emissions, temperature rising, and the consequences they have on the environment. He also connects these points back to other world problems, like poverty, hunger, and other pandemics. He used a quote from Robert Frost in his speech that i really liked, ""Some say the world will end in fire; some say in ice." Either, he notes, "would suffice."" I really like this because it is basically saying that the world will come to an end one way or another, but I am not saying i would like the world to come to an end I just like the quote. I believe Al Gore used this to say that if we continue to ruin the environment we are all going to die.

  1. I love the quote you chose! "Some say the world will end in fire; some say in ice." This is both a metaphorical and literal ending to of earth. This makes me think twice about my actions and how they effect the planet. I agree with you, I do not want the earth to come to an end like the quote. I think Al did a standup job by not creating a difficult to understand speech. This really allows everyone to listen and get an earful of the devastations we are putting on this planet.

  2. How was Al Gore the first person to notice that this was happening? I always wondered if he just knew a scientist or if he did the math himself. Was there very much on the subject before he published the book?
This Robert Frost sounds pretty good, I'm gonna have to look him up. That quote is a very interesting way of putting the end of the world.
