Final Exploration

I thought that “The Idea of a Local Economy” was very repetitive. It covered a lot of interesting topics which I could relate to, but I felt that the author kept restating his topics in multiple different ways. I think an interesting idea he covered was the three “efficiencies” that that companies use. I also thought it was interesting how he went in depth about the negative effects of a “free market” economy. He stated, “This idea of a global ‘free market’ economy, despite its obvious moral flaws and its dangerous practical weaknesses, is now the ruling orthodoxy of this age.”

“Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold…We see that a clean environment, wealth or democracy mean little in the face of war, especially nuclear war, and that material development is not sufficient to ensure human happiness.” This was said by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. I, personally, hate reading, but reading this speech amazed me and it was very interesting. He covered so much important information and problems our world was facing and different ways we could learn to fix them. Gyatso said, “Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries of with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each one of us individually.”

  1. I also think that berry repeated a lot of the same topics. I think it's because he couldn't think of other ideas so he just kept repeating the topics. He gives the negative side of the free market economy with the positive side. I really liked the quote that you picked for the Dalai Lama Nobel Peace Prize award. The story or his speech sounds really interesting,

  2. I do agree that the Berry essay was a bit redundant and seemed to repeat itself a lot, but it did have some good things written that I don't think many people think about on a daily basis. I also read the Dalai Lama speech and I felt it was very moving, and very true, so much so in this day and time. People as a whole have become so materialistic that they don't think about their inner peace, so they try to fill the void with things.
