"The Idea of a Local Economy" allows us to see that money in fact does make the world go around... when Berry defines what a corporation is he states "A corporation, essentially, is a pile of money which a number of persons have sold their moral allegiance... it has a single purpose of becoming a bigger pile of money" He then goes on to tell how stockholders just allow their money to work for them, we have become a society in which money is the most important thing in a person's mind. We live believing that we can create machinery to do our jobs, and process all of our food because of the cost and efficiency that will come about. Even though our government has set laws against monopolies, collective bargaining, what have you, many of these laws are not being enforced as they should be... why is that? Maybe because everyone becomes a money seeker, and no one wants to think for themselves anymore, however, i agree with Berry in that we the people must begin protecting ourselves from the government, otherwise America will lose it's image as a free nation, of the people, for the people, by the people, and will become a communist nation.
In "The Essay Connection" i read Al Gore's address to "A Planetary Emergency". Back in 2007 Al Gore made it known that our planet was in a state of emergency due to global warming. I really liked when he gave the imagery/analogy, "The earth has a fever, and the fever is rising".... (577). Back in 2007 Gore made it known that our planet was not going to make it, he announced that the ice caps could have as little as 22 year before they completely melt. this would cause our water levels to rise, forcing mass flooding and other tropical storms because the atmosphere is heating up. It is crazy to see that a presidential candidate made it a point to address these issues, but today we never see a president so concerned about the future of our planet and the people living on it. Sadly, his word is going unnoticed. it takes effort from the people living on planet earth now to make a difference in the way global warming affects the future of the world. I think that the mandatory recycling that has gone into effect will help, and maybe people will have a change of heart, but on the other hand i think Americans will still be lazy and ignore the waste they are producing because they figure it wont hurt them, and they wont have to deal with it, unfortunately, their children and their children's children may have to deal with such issues. Gore addresses that the two countries producing the most waste are The United States and China, he then goes on to say "Both countries should stop using the others behavior as an excuse for stalemate and instead develop an agenda for mutual survival in a shared global environment". If changes are not enforced, and this topic ignored, humans will shorten the life span of our planet.
Like "The Idea of a Local Economy", "A Planetary Emergency" addresses a nation problem, din one there is too much government but not enough control, and in the other there is ignorance. If the government were to do their job, they may improve not only our global economy, but the state of our planet and its future.
I also read Al Gore's article and the quote you used from this article really paints a picture in my head. Our earth is getting a fever and just like humans having a fever is not a good thing. Al Gore has done a lot to make people aware of this problem and I know think it is our turn, as individuals to make our own paths and keep the earth from having to high of a fever.
